I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. My wish has come true - I no longer know how to use my telephone.

New bluegrass club in Newcastle NSW

Bob Corbett writes that he is starting up a Bluegrass Society in Newcastle. It is called 'The First Monday Bluegrass Club' and will be held at the Croatian Wickham Sports Club, Albert Street, Wickham at 6pm on the First Monday of every month.

Membership is simple.  Bring your instruments of choice along to the pickin' session held every month.   You do not need to be a professional musician.  All yo uneed is a willingness to participate.   They're not about exclusion.  They encourage anybody with an interest in the bluegrass form and similar styles of music to feel welcome to play along.

It's not an open mic night.  It's about sharing common interest over a beer or three, having a yarn, having a play and having a laugh.

You'll have to leave your bluegrass purism at the door though.  The First Monday Bluegrass Club honours bluegrass but is relaxed enough to visit other styles like country, folk, Australiana, Bush or Irish music (for example) if the moment arises.  It's all for fun.

Please spread the word to any enthusiasts that you may know around around the Newcastle and Hunter Region and by all means drop in if you are ever in Newcastle on the first Monday of the month.

For more info about the First Monday Bluegrass Club go to: www.myspace.com/firstmondaybluegrassclub

All of us here at Bluegrass Australia wish Bob the very best with his new club, and we'll help in any way we can.

There are a batch of 71 photos in the Harrietville area of the site. You can watch a slide show while they play through for you, or step one by one. More pictures are likely to follow.

The calendar - It's Back!!!!

It's back!  A while back, the calendar was one of the most popular parts of the site,  and when the site was rebiult it got pushed to the back of the queue.  Now it's back and anyone can add their own events to the calendar.

That means any of the following can be added:

  • Band gigs (including repeating gigs - you can add a weekly gig for as many weeks as you want)
  • Jam sessions - regular or otherwise.  One-off or every week/month
  • Society meetings
  • Festivals
  • Conventions
  • whatever you like.

Soon, we'll be putting back the radio show listings too, and they'll also appear on the calendar page too.

All we require is that the event be bluegrass-related or old-time country related and in Australia.   We will be keeping it tightly focussed because that way it's more relevant to the readers of the site.

How to add an event (or series of events) to the calendar:

  1. First you must be a registered user of the site.     Registration is free, but that way we can make sure we know who is posting what to the site.
  2. Then log in, go to the registered users area and add the details of your event using the wizard.
  3. You can add your event and then change the dates, so you can re-use the same event description for repeating events.   You can even set up a band gig, say, then when it comes to the dates for the gig, you can have it work out the dates for every second Thursday of the month until July 2009 and the system will work it all out for you and add the dates to the calendar automatically.
  4. You can change or delete any date later if your circumstances change.
  5. Your event will initially need to be approved by our webmaster to check that the event is consistent with the objectives of the web site.

If you're not already a registered user of the site,  do so now, and you can start getting the benefits of having your concert/gig/jam session/bluegrass picnic seen by  the readers of Australia's most-read bluegrass site!

This month inside Bluegrass Australia

Do you want to know of other bluegrass fans in your area?   Do you sit in your living room playing your instrument to CDs, wondering if there are others doing the same thing?   Why not get together with others in an informal setting and see what "the best fun you can have with your clothes on" is like.

Why not arrange a jam session in a park somewhere or at a private home and put the event in our calendar.  See the calendar page for details of how to add your event to the calendar.

 Got any pictures?

Have you got pictures of bluegrass-related happenings in Australia?  We'd love to have them on our site.   Historical, current,  wacky or serious.  Doesnt matter.  Naturally, we will give full credit to the photographer and/or copyright owner, with links to your own web site if you wish.  Just contact the webmaster through the contact us page.
